Read:Amos 3:1-8. 4: 11-12; Matthew 8:23-27 Amos was a prophet who spoke the truth about people’s lives. He had a strong sense of the solidarity of the people, of the fact that they were one family and he bridled at the injustice they showed in their life. But what was injustice for Amos was often nothing more than people getting on with their lives and looking out for themselves. It doesn’t seem to have been much different from the way our own society functions, it was just that Amos was more committed to the ideal of Israel as one clan than others seem to have been. And because they were one clan, they should have been looking after one another more than they were. Was he right or was he just a fanatic who overstated the reality of life? We could ask the same of our life today. Most people are content simply to get on with their own life, there seems enough to occupy them in that without worrying about others. But we have to ask if we are all in the same boat. Is the storm that threatens one in fact threatening us all? And if we turn to God for help, must we also be willing to accept that he is Father of all as Amos said and therefore he expects us to help one another too? It is time for us to realise that we are not in the boat by ourselves and we cannot ask God to save me and forget about the others.
