Read a fun little book this morning, Julian Fellowes 2004 comedy of manners ``Snobs. Yes, the Fellowes who writes ``Downton Abbey. The book is set in the Thatcher-era U.K. and it is all about the exquisite nuances by which members of that countrys upper class let others know they are ``not our kind of people. Given that the particular kind of class system on which the novel is based never got much traction here in the U.S.A., one can read this book as an anthropological study, I suppose. Of course the plot centers around efforts of someone who is striving to ascend the social ladder by marrying a member of the nobility. Fellowes chronicles the most subtle lift of an eyebrow, the tiny pause in speech, the topics of conversation that are class indicators and are used to let outsiders know just how outside they really are. Its a fun silly read, and it did help me to understand a little better some of the hostility faced by the Kate Middletons of the world. nytimes/2005/03/13/books/review/013AMESL.html?_r=0
