Read this article recently and found it thought provoking and worth sharing for its contrarian take on fitness and cognitive function: This subject is difficult in that cognitive encompasses so many functions. Im one to believe the improvement in cognitive function due to exercise is a removal of metabolic impediment rather than actual cognitive improvement. A child has two classes in school. In one, he starts with a 100% and can lose points as the class goes on. As the quality of his school work decreases, so does his grade. In the other class, he starts with a 0, and as he works through the semester, he gains points to build up his grade. The student either starts out perfect or has to build up to it. It will never be possible to judge a persons cognitive potential, but I think it is fair to assume most START with an A. Therefore, the cognitive decline is a build up of the detractors/junk collected in life. Form follows function, and epigenetics overshadows traditional genetics. Exercise/physical exertion/eustress removes the junk that builds through the entire body. The longer that junk is in the body, the worse its effects and the magnification of its intensity. It is never too late to start removing junk, which is why we see improvement in cognitive function in the elderly population with exercise. Considering the point that it takes time to remove the junk, early and vigorous action, including exercise could prove exponential in its long term benefits.
