Reader Mail (Napolitano): "I read your subject article and was delighted to see you agree with me that President Obama is an anti-immigrant president. I am largely a conservative Republican, but I strongly disagree with 99% of Republicans on immigration. Everyone in the USA needs to see and agree that the US government clearly has waited just far too long to approach the immigration issue as anything less than immediately making all so-called illegal immigrants either permanent resident aliens or full US citizens. First and foremost, doing anything less would be outright cruel because far, far too many immigrants settled here many years ago and have given birth here to children that are 100% Americans, and those American children now are raising their own American families. If those immigrants have accomplished all of that, they are more than qualified to be made US citizens immediately, even if they do not know the name of the place of the first battle of the Revolutionary War or the name of the 16th president of the United States. Second, but equally important, the US government just cannot possibly deport the 14,000,000 or so immigrants that already are making their homes in the US and should stop trying to do so immediately, unless it happens to arrest and convict an immigrant on a felony offense and still wants to deport the felon after he serves his time in a penitentiary. Otherwise, let the immigrants that are here stay where they are and quit harassing them. Third, the US government immediately must afford unquestioned legal status to all immigrants standing on US soil and thereby eliminate the constant worry those immigrants have that they might be deported. This can be efficiently accomplished by (i) having each immigrant fill out an application on no more than one side of an 8-1/2 X 11 sheet of paper calling for only the most basic information needed by the government regarding that immigrant, (ii) having the immigrant secure a background check without any waiting period at any place that sells guns, (iii) having the immigrant take the application and results of the background check to any US Post Office and giving both to any postal clerk without any kind of fee, and (iv) having the postal clerk giving the immigrant immediately and on the spot (a) either a permanent resident alien document or, preferably, a naturalized US citizen certificate after administering the citizenship oath to the former immigrant, and (b) a Social Security card identical to the one I have. That is it. It should be a procedure that can be fully accomplished in no more than either one morning or one afternoon, failing which the US government should find out overnight that same night why not and correct it until it can be. If any of the foregoing cannot be accomplished immediately, then I urge all such immigrants to promptly come to Texas, where we will gladly make each and every one of them Naturalized Texans on the spot because we Texans know the immigrants are good people and Texas needs all the good people it can attract. Many of those good people have been going back and forth across the Texas border with Mexico to work here and to visit their families in Mexico for many decades in the past and that very successful practice should continue unabated. They will find out that Texans annually celebrate Cinco de Mayo and Fiestas Patrias along with just about any other excuse Texans can find to celebrate."
