Real talk time. Went to a Olympic lifting and strength and conditioning workshop last night in Oxford Uni put on by England athletics. It was led by a gent named Rob Thickpenny. He provided very good advice and information and hope to gain some more knowledge in the future. However one thing was more apparent. I decided to get hold of a bar and attempt some basic high pulls, overhead squats and my positions and posture was all over the place. I could feel the body fighting against me trying to hit the right positions due to lack of flexibility, throraic and lumbar stability. Lower limb mobility and range. It was humbling considering I used to be ranked 5th in the UK for 60m hurdles. Since failing to make the 2012 olympic trials for 110 hurdles I havent really done much proper consistent training apart from some jogging for my half marathon I did in March and bits and pieces of training for the Spartan race in Sept this year. So I thought I need to see where I am really at and did a basic circuit test this morning with Zoey: 1 min each exercise as many reps as possible with perfect form. Recovery 2 mins in between each ex. The circuit is a quick and simple one if you are strapped for time. There are many others and other exercises that can be done. Here were the results: Press Ups (nose to floor) 36 Crunches (Jacknives) 63 Squats (Bum to chair) 34 Tricep dips 49 Calf raise with a jump 62 Leg lowers 21 Berpes 20 Back extentions 30 Compared with scores I did in 2012 it makes sense why I could hit certain positions with a bar. So its back to basics, get the fundamentals right before I move forwards. Be honest with yourself when training. Ensure you have the basics nailed down. Next week I will talk about my med ball madness circuit and how I get on with that.
