Really rough one today. I was warned about this prior to coming - TopicsExpress

Really rough one today. I was warned about this prior to coming up, but I ignored it anyway. Being somebody of notoriety in a small retirement town is a blast. People talk to you incessantly, equating you to their sons or grandsons; bringing you food or hugs. You begin to bond with these people. Carriers that are friends with me on fb understand what I mean; often times, the Post Office employee is the one person they see every day; they look forward to it. One of my best customers came in, eyes puffy and red, hands shaking. He was holding his wallet and PO Box keys. I asked him what was wrong, and he said he needed a favor. He asked me to allow him to pre-pay for one large envelope. When asked why, he said he was being flown to Washington state. To hospice care. He asked I pull all of his Christmas cards and mail them to him up there, as he hadnt the heart to tell his family he was not going to make it to the end of the year. He told me I was as much family as anyone at this point. I told him I would be more than willing to do this for him. As we were both crying at this point, he put his hand out for a handshake. I walked around the counter and hugged him. He told me he loved me and thanked me for everything. He handed me his keys, and he walked out. Ill never see him again. They warned me that getting close to these people will only bring tragedy. I wouldnt have it any other way. Mr. Cotten, I love you too.
