Rebecca James In Bodies That Matter 2 I am showing two works, Velvet Curtains With A Satin Lining and Lipstickaction. The first are objects and the second is a performance. These works come from my discomfort with campaigns advertising cosmetic products to women. The success of these marketing strategies is predicated on the feelings of inadequacy they can provoke in their target audience by demonstrating unreal and therefore unattainable images of feminine beauty perfection. My decorative acts are contradictory and revel in the subjective desire to adorn and embellish while resisting submission to improvement and correction. Enjoying the sensual pleasure of makeup products while subverting the conventions of their use; applying products intended to enhance women to objects connected to filth, labour and human waste. Lipstick on a manhole cover, street grease printed on lingerie satin.. These works indulge in playful interaction with loaded material and in doing so they resist the psychic damage inflicted by continual re-presentations of idealised female beauty.
