Mayor of the key town of Bor, Nhial Majak Nhial said on Wednesday that the rebels have taken control of Bor after the government troops loyal to President Salva Kiir made a “tactical withdrawal” to Malual Chaat army barracks, 3 km (2 miles) south of the town. “The two sides have been fighting over the city since Tuesday,” Nhial added. The army retook control of the flashpoint town on December 24, nearly a week after the rebels seized the town. This is while rebels launched new battles with the troops in Bor on Tuesday morning. The fighting came despite an earlier agreement by the rival parties to begin peace talks in the neighboring Ethiopia, in an effort to end weeks of ethnic bloodshed in the world’s youngest nation. Machar warned that his forces would keep fighting until a ceasefire deal is reached, refusing to have face-to-face negotiations with President Kiir. He said his representatives are sent to Addis Ababa. The violence erupted in the oil-rich country on December 15 after President Kiir accused former vice president of attempting to stage a coup. According to the UN mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), over 1,000 people have lost their lives and more than 2,000 others have been displaced as a result of deadly conflict in the African country. On December 30, the African Union (AU) threatened tough measures, including sanctions, against those inciting violence in the country, fearing a spillover into the neighboring countries.
