Recent answer we gave to a journalist about whether more people want to make a career change when the economy is bad. What do you guys think? >>>> There are more push reasons to do a career change when the economy is bad. Fewer jobs, promotions, bonuses, salary rises, etc. Plus, when things are really bad with the economy career change sometimes gets hoisted on people rather than being their decision. Look at the 19,000 jobs being cut from Barclays Investment Banking. Having said that, a lot of push factors are always present - macho culture, pressure and stress, long hours. The pull factors interest us more. What is it that people want to escape towards? Were seeing a massive reappraisal of values (triggered in part, admittedly, by some of the systemic failures of recent years - the corporate route isnt as safe as it was billed). What people are attracted by is Purpose, Autonomy and Growth. The dream is doing work that matters to you, on your own terms, learning skills that you value. The rise of entrepreneurship, solo-preneurship and social enterprise values permeating the economy mean that the alternatives to a corporate job have never been more attractive. The other massive driver of this trend is technology. It has never been easier or cheaper to start a business or go freelance. Its still hard, of course, but increasing numbers of people are choosing to take their fates into their own hands rather than wait for the corporate overlords to decide that the music has stopped and theyre the ones left without a chair. And thats really exciting.
