Recent developments Even the state governments abysmal NSW Gas Plan announced last week is a sign of our impact, as its an attempt to placate concerned communities across NSW. However, basically this plan doesnt fix any of our long-held concerns. For everyone living within existing petroleum exploration licence areas, theres little to nothing new. There are no new protections for water resources or farmlands, nor any improvements in safeguarding human health. The NSW Gas Plan does nothing to address the risks of the Narrabri Gas Project. Santos own referral to the Federal Government, states that that the project in the Pilliga will cause a significant impact on the groundwater resources of the Gunnedah-Oxley Basin. This admission reaffirms the great significance of the research released last week that shows that the Pilliga is the most significant recharge zone for the Great Artesian Basin in all of NSW. Just this week new peer reviewed research has shown that methane levels in some QLD gasfields are as much as triple normal levels. This increases health and bushfire risks on local level and has debunked the myth that coal seam gas is a better choice for the climate. See the SMH article here. So were more convinced than ever that our arguments are strong, and we can see we have an extraordinary numbers engaged in the campaign, yet the government is still failing to genuinely hear our pleas. So what are the next steps? Santos have approval to drill 7 more coal seam gas exploration wells in the Pilliga, about 40km south of Narrabri. The return of the drill rig is long anticipated, and it could still arrive any week. While the 850 well Narrabri Gas Project has recently been referred to the Federal Government for assessment, these 7 new wells have already been approved under the exploration licence. Next time, we must take the Big Picture directly to Santos! When Santos return with their drill rig to again start drilling through the Great Artesian Basin, the opposition of our local communities will be impossible to ignore. When the drill rig returns, as a network we will make a massive and inspiring statement of powerful community opposition. With hundreds of everyday people of the north-west community gathered near the site of the controversial drilling in the Pilliga, we can expect national media attention for our concerns. Together we will remind Santos, the government, indeed all of Australia, that Santos has no social licence in the North West! We must remember the next 6 months are crucial.
