Recent events have made me take a good look at Philadelphia sports the and their future. The Sixers: They have made the decision to build for long term success by sacrificing wins now and building for the future. Lets hope it will be attractive for quality free agents and well chosen draft picks. The Eagles: It appears that Chip Kelly was the right person to lead this team. Bringing in young players and getting everything out of his current players gives us a bright future. 1- Is Nick Foles for real? We will get a better idea this year. 2- Was releasing DeJean Jackson the right move? 3- How much improvement will we see in the defense? From start to finish we saw an incredible improvement last year. The future looks good. The Flyers: I think Ron Hexstall will be a good choice as GM. I wanted the Flyers to bring him back to take over for Holmgren. Former Flyers executives have done well around the league. Look at LA as a prime example Dean Lombardi and Ron Hexstall turned the Kings into champions without interference from ownership. They will probably win there second cup in 3 years. Hexstall seems to have a plan to build from the bottom up.The Flyer give up on young talent to soon and trade them off for over the hill veterans. The George Allan formula didnt work in the NFL it also doesnt work in the NHL. The only aging veteran they brought in that was worth the money was Jaromír Jágr and they let him walk the next year. Ask yourself would the Blackhawks have won 2 cups without Patrick Sharp? Would the Kings be inline to win their second cup in 3 years without Justin Williams, I still dont have a problem with trading Richards and Carter. Mike Richards is a clutch player but he is not a leader and you couldnt strip him of his captaincy and expect him to be effective. Jeff Carter has scored a lot of goals but with the amount of shots he takes and the amount of open nets he sees, he should have scored twice as many goals and was never Mr Clutch in Philadelphia Ed Snider is the Al Davis of the NHL, unfortunately Al didnt see than the NFL passed him by. Ed your making the same mistake, please step aside or maybe Comcast can make you step aside. Looks like we finally have the goalie of the future now continue to build around him. Living in the past is not necessarily bad. As I said in think Ron Hexstall is a good choice just dont keep bringing in the same type of players big slow physical players and get with the rest of the league speedy talented players are the way of the NHL. I would like to see the Flyers bring in Ray Shero as an assistant to Hexstall, I think he made the right moves in Pittsburgh, there the coach was about as effective as Charlie Manuel nobody will ever tell me they got all they could out of their teams. The Phillies: The best thing the owners can do for the city of Philadelphia is sell the team. After a few years of success they have reverted back to their old ways of putting profit ahead of winning, and they cant even get that right. Reuben Amaro has systemically destroyed this team. Ed Wades first priority was to rebuild the farm system. That was how we got Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Cole Hamels, Carlos Ruiz. He just couldnt get them over the hump. Pat Gillick only made some minor moves and they win a title. Reuben takes over the next year and they take a step back every year since. Do you think Wade got fleeced in trades with the Phillies. The Atros look like they are finally turning things around with players like Singleton. Wade was bringing in the very same players he drafted in Philadelphia. We were looking forward to a new TV contract and the extra money it would make available. If they kept the team competitive they could have put the Dodgers tv deal to shame. Instead they allow the team to decline and devalue. If you take a close look at the contract you will see that Comcast got off cheap as usual. Do you know Astros make more on there current contract than the Phillies. As I previously stated this team will never be competitive under current ownership. The Phillies are looking at another string of losing like they did in the 80s and 90s. Under current ownership we have had 4 appearances in the world series winning once. 83 losing to Baltimore, 93 losing to the Blue Jays, both of those teams over-achieved. Winning in 08 over the Rays. Losing to the Yankees 09 the manager was totally at fault there. Than losing the LCS, than the Divisional series, to not making the playoffs. This year trying to sell the fans on big off season moves of signing Marlon Byrd and AJ Burnett were going to be the difference. I think Ryne Sandberg was set-up to fail. So I think the future looks bright for 3 of the 4 teams. Unfortunately the team going in the wrong direction plays almost as many game as the three other teams combined. Its never been easy being a Philadelphia sports fan, thats why I have so much contempt for fans that were born and raised here that calm to be fans of other teams. You can say all you want about Philadelphia fans but every team in professional sports wants fans this passionate. Local Cowboys, Patriots, Steelers, and Yankees fans are just bandwagon jumpers and have no passion for these teams. Thats why they try to look so zealous when they are just obnoxious frauds try to look like true fans.
