Recently I have noted that there are some people in our community - TopicsExpress

Recently I have noted that there are some people in our community who have begun to get more involved in bashing certain political figures based on things that have happened in that persons personal life. There was Rob Ford, who truthfully... he is a gong show, but I dont know him personally and so although I may comment on his behavior or his politics - I really have no right to attack him personally. Now we have more recently heard that Gregor Roberston, Mayor of Vancouver and his wife are separating. Now I do understand that political life is also public life, and that it means those who enter politics are under a microscope... But does that justify the way some people in our community are reacting and commenting on social media? A family has broken up, for various reasons I am sure. It takes two to make a marriage work, just as it takes two to break it down. For the Robertson family this is a sad and difficult time... instead of being the compassionate people that we are all capable of being... some have lost their humanity and have resorted to almost violently vicious personal attacks on the mayor. We are a part of a community that has spent decades fighting for rights, and to protect ourselves against attacks from others. I may not always agree with the politics of our mayor, or all of the decisions that he makes, I may not always agree with his party politics. All of that aside, he is a man that has worked very hard to do what he thinks is right for our city, and although I do not agree with all that he has done... on the whole he has done a pretty damn good job. Certainly better than some of the people attacking him would do. At the end of that day he is just a man, and one who has supported our community. Maybe not to the satisfaction of all, but he has tried and done more than most. The fact that members of our community can suddenly be so callous toward another human being... is shameful. Or have they forgotten all that we have fought for? Hes not perfect, but we could do much worse - we could have an anti gay, anti everything mayor. He has worked hard to support our community, the very least we can do is at least show a wee bit of compassion as his family deals with what is a very difficult time... the break up of that family.
