Recently the book on Chandran Peringode was released. It was through the documentary 3D Stereo Caste directed by Ajith Kumar A S (during its screening in IIT Madras) that I came to know about this prominent artist who was kept outside temples, festivals and denied opportunities, all due to the caste structures embedded in the field of music. 3D stereo caste was able to initiate the discussions that could bring forth the caste dynamics within the music field. Focusing on Kerala music field, Director with his camera intrudes into the spaces of music that structurally has been construed in a manner that would keep Dalits at a distance. So called prestigious brand of Kalamandalam which even though deemed as university in 2006 is still doomed to be the propagators of the caste hindu arts forms, without allowing Dalits or their diverse forms of art inside its perimeter. Author rightly pointed out during the discussions that while Folk music studies is seen mostly as an anthropological endeavor, the hindu art forms are provided with a status of secular credential which it does not deserve. As everyone who attended the screening pointed out, we would definitely like to watch the next parts of the documentary. I hope it would come out soon.
