If youre plagued by House Sparrows eating all the seed and suet as I am, you may want to try switching to straight beef suet from the butcher during the cold months. I switched last week for the second winter now, and Im finding that the native birds (woodpeckers and nuthatches for me) will consume it readily while the House Sparrows dont give it a second look. Personally, I dont render it as it takes hours to slowly melt - I just cut off chunks for the feeder cages or suet log, and that seems to work just fine.
