In one game, he was hit in the head by three guys on the same play. In another game, a week ago against B.C., he was pushed into a bench out of bounds. Through it all, through game after game of what he believes are late hits — many to his head — he wonders why the CFL isnt protecting its quarterbacks like it promised it would. “I thought there was a mandate to protect quarterbacks,” said Burris. “I’ve been getting hit a lot in the head. I just want consistency. I’ve been in this league long enough, I think I deserve that respect. I don’t harp on officials. I think they do a good job with all the chaos going on. If there’s a mandate to do something, then call it like it is. The NFL protects Tom Brady and their marquee guys, the same should be done here.” Burris said refs were calling late hits and blows to the head early in the season, but have cut back. He said quarterbacks that stay in the pocket are getting more respect than guys who run around a bit. “It seems for several weeks the hit has to be really blatant for a flag to be thrown,” said the 39-year-old Burris. “Things are being said, but nothing’s being done. I don’t know why there’s a discrepancy on who’s being protected. Don’t let it where one quarterback is getting grabbed by the shoulders and they throw a flag and another guy gets hit in the face by three guys and it takes blood to get a flag thrown. If they’re going to enforce it, then enforce it.”
