Redbud has beautiful flowers but it also makes two colors of basket making material. If branches are collected in spring, or boiled, the outer bark comes off. What remains can make a light woody colored weaving material. If collected in fall or winter, the bark remains on the branches and is used to weave in reddish brown patterns. Redbud flowering in the Merced Canyon has reached its peak and is now beginning to fade.
