Reduced to tears (& not in a good way) by two female pensioners today. We took the dogs down to Cramond river (as we do quite often) - both mine are on leads walking along & we meet a lady with two lovely golden retreivers coming in the opposite direction. The look on her face could have turned milk, so I called & merry Morning! - to which she indicates one of her dogs - both off leads - & said Hes terribly frightened of other dogs & is shouting Walk on Milo walk on, just walk on - so as it trots past us growling (theres a good 15ft between us all anyway) I pull mine closer & ask them to sit (which they did) & spoke to her dog as it went past. Off we went again & when we found a deserted spot, down at the waters edge, let my guys off for a paddle. At which point they both clocked a terrier up on the path, at the same itme its owner saw us & started heading down to the ONE bit of riverbank were on. I call my dogs out the water, put them on the lead, ask them to sit etc - as she & her dog keep coming towards us. I do the Morning! thing again & ask are you wanting to be down on this bit? - she tells me her dog likes the water (Im thinking YOUVE A WHOLE FRICKIN MILE OF IT TO CHOOSE FROM!!) but I politely say, no problem well find another spot & shes telling me must be horrid having your dogs on the lead all the time, you cant see round corners... & off we go as Im calling over my shoulder to her Uhuh, thanks now - nice to meet you...etc. We go a bit further along, find another bit of empty river - & christ! Ten minutes later does the same woman with her terrier not appear & its coming towards my two - who, youve guessed it - Ive now hauled out the water, leads on, sit etc - & call up to her on the path Could you call your dog please? - to which she replies Oh he just does his own thing...FFS!! ...she then proceeds to tell me that everyone, all the regular walkers along here have been warned about your dogs... Cue me threatening to burst into tears. I asked her why & her reply? Because they look fierce... - shes still making no move to come & get her dog which is now STANDING WITH ITS FECKING FRONT PAWS ON VOOKS NOSE!!! ...Voök never moved a muscle, but Vega is now whining so I asked her if she could come & retrieve her dog because its now tormenting my dogs & pointed out how she would feel if the roles were reversed. She comes down & carries on castigating me for having two large dogs saying it must be so stressful for you having to keep them away from other dogs... *ARE YOU FRICKIN KIDDING ME LADY!!!* & for walking them where loads of people walk their dogs & she walks her dog every second day & she still cant get hold of her bloomin terrier which is now trying to give its ball to Voök in order to play. Im still being polite & ask Does this look like a fierce dog to you? ...pointing to Voök whos now in the down play position.... She admits that no, its obviously not a nasty dog - & I said, you have judged me & my dogs based on how they look. We call good morning to all the walkers along here, keep our dogs on leads until we find a quiet spot to let them off where we wont bother anyone else because we appreciate some people are afraid of bigger dogs, we clean up after them & we do our best to ensure we come across as friendly. You have upset me dreadfully by insinuating my dogs are fierce & that all the regular walkers here have been warned about them ...& thats when my bottom lip went & I burst into tears, said Thank you for letting me know how narrow minded & judgemental people around here are. Im going home....(hardly big girls pants, but hey) So off we head back to the car & we meet Fiona, out with three of her walkers - them on one side of the path, me on the other & I burble my tale of woe to her (sorry missus!) - Just as all the dogs are lying down (& Ive stopped bubbling like a fanny) FFS, does the retriever wumman not come past again - makes a HUGE show of terror, throws her lead at her frightened dog, shouting go on Milo, go on, just keep moving - I smile to her & say, its ok, they are friendly - she literally spat something nasty at me & that was it. Ah, I guess youre the lady whos telling everyone to beware of my fierce dogs? - she said something to suggest its not & I added that the other lady had told me all about it & how upsetting that is for a responsible dog walker - to which she snaps Well, I walk here every day - & by that time smaller has had enough of me being upset & calls at her that doesnt mean you own the place!...as she strode off shouting over her shoulder Its my friend & I can talk to her if I want....& its not an airdale its a patterdale... If my dogs were as shes telling everyone Id have called it FECKING LUNCH!! Get into the car, burst into tears again & head for Tesco (dogs boiling beef on the bone) - because I now look like a snottering Alice feckin Cooper I send smaller in & open the tailgate & sit waiting with my dogs. At which point, not one but TWO people come over to the car saying I had to come & see your dogs, they are just gorgeous!!! - the attached photos are my two fierce dogs meeting strangers for the first time, who approached their territory uninvited & where they (my dogs) are in a confined, no-flight space...
