Reflection (Numbers 11; 4 – 15) “I cannot carry these people - TopicsExpress

Reflection (Numbers 11; 4 – 15) “I cannot carry these people by myself, the burden it too heavy for me” Moses had it hard and almost impossible as a leader of the People of Israel. He was given the mission of leading the Hebrews across the desert to the Promised Land. In the reading above, he is fed up with their endless complaints, over anything. He told God, “I cannot carry this burden any longer”. He was almost giving up. Have you ever heard yourself saying these same words of Moses to God or someone? ‘I am tired, enough is enough!’ This was the feeling of Jeremiah at one point in his mission. He nearly left; actually he was almost out of it. He told God, “O Lord, you deceived me, and I was deceived” (Jer. 20: 7). Paul felt the same till the Lord assured him saying “my grace is sufficient for you” (2 Cor. 12: 9). In the film, Quo Vadis, Peter is tired and afraid because Nero, the Emperor, has not only accused the Christians of burning the City but also threatened to arrest all of them and have them killed. The Lord appears to the Peter as he sets back home to Palestine, and tells him ‘Quo Vadis?’ ‘Where are you going’? In moments of disappointments and frustration, it is very easy to look only at what we do not have, or what we are deprived of, and fail to see the Lord’s providence and loving actions. Additionally, in our mission, we may not receive praise and support from people as we expect. We may feel used or abused, and therefore the feeling of giving up may from time to time cross our minds, sometimes strongly. We have often said, ‘This is enough, I am out of this.’ This is the time to look again at the experience of those who have been there already like Moses, Jeremiah, Peter and Paul, and learn from them. Is quitting your mission whenever you feel rejected, abused, or ignored or humiliated by others or by the system the best solution? Perhaps, this is the time you may want to listen to what the Lord said to Paul, “my grace is sufficient for you”. Lord, when I run out of energy today as I serve your people, come to my aid. Amen
