Reflections of a complete gaming nube on the installation of a PS4: our first gaming console. Though Pip and I have been playing and writing roleplaying games for over thirty years, video games have never really appealled. I had a flirtation with Asteroids in my undergraduate days (remember, David Purdue?), suffered a few bruising encounters with Doom, played Diablo happily through a few times in god mode, and enjoyed a few social games of Mario Cart. Thats been about my total exposure. So here are my first impressions of PS4 after a few days casual play, sampling DriveClub, FarCry4, Alien Isolation, The Last of Us Remastered, and Little Big Planet 3. Its a beautiful system. As a 3D artist, I love the incredible real time rendering and texturing. This is the future. Those controllers are new way of thinking. The learning curve is very steep, and for casual/older folk, a considerable challenge. Were persevering though, and getting noticably more competent. I found R1! I found the brakes! Despite vast improvements, I am still... *shocked* is an accurate word here, about the centrality of violence in the games. Not as mechanism, but as rationale. Its a far right, gun-nut universe. And its often creepy. We have a long way to go in our storytelling. Im *loving* Alien Isolation, the only story Ive advanced in to any depth. But its usually a case of check the walkthrough/cheatsheet, advance, die, check the walkthrough... Is every game, like this? Surprisingly, the most satisfying experience so far has been driving through Northern Europe and Canada in the snow and rain in DriveClub. Blissful - I can see myself doing this for hours at a time. You folk have really icy roads. Luckily there are no insurance premiums in virtuality. The great game continues!
