Reflections on Spirituality In my short career in religious study, I have been confronted by many things. In most instances, these have been met with easy resolution. Now entering a third semester at seminary, a short one to be sure, I have been smacked with a difficulty, either stepping outside of myself and donning a cloak of illusion or staying within and abandoning all that I have experienced concerning the spiritual. I see myself engaged on a great battlefield. The battle that is being waged is between the theists, who are arguing on behave of an ultimate Creator, and the atheist, who are likewise arguing on behave of mankind as the ultimate creator of its existence. I am simultaneously in neither camp and in both camps. Not only am I apparently engaged fighting on both sides against foes that are unknown to me, I am also engaged in a fight in, and within, myself. Rationality, the realm of the atheists, demands that reality is absolutely fact based, that there is neither room for, nor evidence of, an Ultimate Creator. Spirituality, the realm of the theist, demands that reality is a manifestation of the Ultimate Creator. That without him it ceases to exist. I do not know the shape of things to come, I wish not to speculate on them. What I do know is that there is something that calls me to investigate. Will that something be an actual “Ultimate Creator” or will I find that that “Ultimate Creator” is the whole of humankind? Over the next few weeks, today being 27 Dec 2014, I will be immersed in a course that will afford me little time for my facebook friends. Please be patient as I explore this dimension of my reality.
