Reflections on a Sorority Henna party! I was never part of a College Sorority. Four degrees, and credits toward a Doctorate, never even got me close to a Sorority experience. I am not sure if it was because none of my Colleges had any that I was interested in, or that stereotypes of Sorority girls just clouded my subconscious to a point that I did not even explore the possibilities.. However, all that changed in a wistful two hours with the Amazing women at St. Johns University. Warmly welcomed with smiles and enthusiasm the girls whisked myself and Sagyara into a room populated with Sorority sisters. They gave us many cheers and their signature applause. I felt so at home. I felt like I had stepped into the living breathing Womens Empowerment in which I talk about and publicize on a daily Basis. That sisterly, TRIBAL , no-cattiness support that is SO important for us women to cultivate was an alive, breathing, tangible entity which permeated the room with love, and warmth. I began to place henna designs on each and every girl, over thirty Sisters, carefully feeling their energy for the best designs for that young woman. Weaving symbols for prosperity, calmness, love, insight, guidence and knowledge. Sending out all the traditional, family Gypsy blessings I could for these beautiful, deserving girls. We talked, we chatted, they spoke of politics, standards of beauty, philosophy, and through Shining eyes which dreamed of changing the world, I was able to reconnect with my own youth and wonder...how different would my college experience have been had I the love and sisterly support such as I witnessed within this Sorority? As a Tribal belly dancer, and leader of a Tribal Troupe, I see the bonds of TRIBE within my own walls as it is part of the Tribal Dance Long Island mission...To promote womens strength and beauty through support and love, not the stereotypical tear-down that women are famous for...but to see it outside my own Studio, in women so young, was so life affirming, giving me new and refreshed motivation of my own vision... Henna gives many gifts to the wearer, but these young ladies gave the Henna Artist a gift as well...for that, I am forever grateful. Ladies, Thank you for the gift of your youth and vision, intelligence and acceptance. May your light always be bright, May the sands be a warm comfort in cold nights, May you always have water, May the caravan always come to your door, May the oasis always be found. with love and Bright Blessings, Cienna Tribal Dance Long Island & Caravan Connection New York.
