Reflections on my 50th Birthday! I am 50 years old today! “It is being said that a birthday is not only special to the person who celebrates it, but it is also a day that is very important to the parents of the person celebrating getting another year older.” It was on September 25, 1963, Wednesday at 3:00 in the morning when I took a breath of earth’s air. Today, Wednesday, September 25, is my 50th birthday. Yes, another year that adds to my life as I am reflecting on this same day, 50 years of journeying into life. There are many happenings that come to my life which make me grow and become a better person in the eyes of my Creator. There are many trials that I have met; there are many failures and many successes which all these make me a mature person. All these, it’s because the Lord has become my stronghold; in Him I put my trust. Today is my birthday and once again, I am reminded of the passage in the Psalm 139 every time I say my prayer in the Liturgy of the Hours in Week IV of the morning prayer which says: For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts,[a] God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand— when I awake, I am still with you. From these lines, there are many things that strikes me…that I was made by God through my beloved parents. I am a beautiful gift…that my life has meaning and has a purpose….that I am precious in the eyes of God. As I reflect on the messages from my friends, former pupils and colleagues, it gives me an inspiration that makes my life so meaningful and so I say: Thank you God for creating me and one more glorious day on this earth to witness the beauty of life and its wonderful splendors. And my prayer is this: Thank you God for giving me another year of life…. Thank you for all the people b who remembered me today… by sending cards, and letters, gifts and good wishes. Thank you for all the experience of this past year; for times of success which will always be happy memories, for times of failures which reminded me of my own weakness and of my need for you, for times of joy when the sun was shining, for times of sadness which drove me to you. Forgive me for the hours I wasted, for the chances I failed to take, for the opportunities I missed this past year, help me in the days ahead to make this best year yet, and through it to bring good credit to myself, happiness and pride to my loved ones, and joy to you. Amen.
