Reformed Ogboni Fraternity not a cult, says leader AS the countdown to its centenary on December 18 continues, the Reformed Ogboni Fraternity (ROF) has asked Nigerians to carefully study it, its activities and stop perceiving it as a secret cult. The Olori (Supreme Leader), Otunba Francis Meshioye, stated this at a media briefing to announce the Fraternity’s forthcoming centenary celebration. According to Meshioye, in spite of the fact that the Fraternity founded on December 18, 1914, has witnessed tremendous growth in membership and conclaves across the globe, its greatest challenge remains its negative perception by the public. He said, “Many people create mental stereotypes by creating the image of what the Fraternity should be or how her members should or must look like. Both reasonable and unreasonable attitudes and acts are assumed of members of the Fraternity. Even unnecessary spiritual and terrestrial demeanours or manifestations are expected to be part of members’ outlook. “We have many people who approach our portals and ask us questions with the expectations to get rich quick without industry. Such people are always turned back once they are informed at the point of application of what our Fraternity stands for. In a similar manner, many believe that they can perpetrate criminality when they become our members; they are also disappointed like the first group of people when they are informed of the need to uphold high morals and to be obedient to the laws of whichever nations they may find themselves in. Despite the fact that we live the life of noble characters, the public at large and the religious communities still misconstrue our objectives.” Meshioye said the ROF fulfill its obligations to relevant government agencies like other incorporated entities and files returns at the Corporate Affairs Commission, “We comply with the provisions of the law and file annual returns of our organization with the Corporate Affairs Commission. We hold our meetings at conspicuous places all over the world. We relate with necessary government agencies as required by law based on our actions at each point in time,” he said. The leader said members would overcome the public misconceptions about the fraternity “with pure thoughts, good words and honourable deeds. The Fraternity will be very vigilant to ensuring that her tenets and practices are upheld at all levels, frowning at indiscipline and eliminating practices that are not consistent with her objectives.”
