Registered Dental Hygienists attend college to take pre- requisite - TopicsExpress

Registered Dental Hygienists attend college to take pre- requisite classes in English, microbiology, chemistry, anatomy & physiology, nutrition, speech, sociology and then apply for acceptance into a two year, Associate Degree or four year Bachelor Degree dental hygiene program. Dental hygiene program classes include head& neck anatomy, dental anatomy, oral histology & embryology, dental radiology, instrumentation, medical emergencies, clinical dental hygiene, community dental hygiene, ethics & practice management, and research methodology just to name a few courses. Due to direct general supervision laws in Mississippi, dental hygienists can only work for a dentist in private practice, MS State Department of Health or teach at one of the five dental hygiene schools. Direct supervision requires the dentist to physically examine the patient, diagnose the condition, delegate treatment to the hygienist, remain in the treatment facility and evaluate the hygienists performance after the treatment is complete! General supervision requires the dentist to examine a patient at designated intervals, confirm the dental hygiene diagnoses, collaborate with the hygienist providing the treatment, be available for consultation and referral either in the same or near by location. Changing the MS Dental Practice Act to allow general supervision of dental hygienists is about treating more people who need to have preventive dental services. It is about approximately 1,500 well educated, capable, predominantly female dental hygienists who are underemployed because of current direct supervision laws. Please help me change the FACE of Mississippi, one Smile at a Time! Call your Senators and Representatives and ask them to change the MS Dental Practice Act to allow General Supervision of Dental Hygienists! I want Mississippi hygienists to have stable incomes and work to their full potential to save smiles like the ones mentioned in this article in other states do. dentistryiq/articles/2013/11/directors-message-hygiene-compensation.html
