Religion is a very powerful thing. Many people turn to religious leaders for comfort in times of sorrow, stress or grief. A religious leader can lift a person up with their words, or hurt them like no one else can. Never give someone else that kind of power over you. Regardless of your religious views, remember, everyone is human. Everyone has biases and baggage and history and opinions. You are beautiful. You have inherent worth and dignity, whether it is given to you by others or not. Trust your gut. If spiritual support doesnt feel liberating and affirming, walk away. There is always someone else who will love you, understand you, forgive you, and listen. Sometimes they are members of the clergy -- and many times they are not. Be open to loving community -- wherever it comes from.
