Remember a few weeks ago I told you guys that I turned down a better paying job offer from one of the leading publications in the country, because I believe that the SUNDAY INDEPENDENT is growing me better, and my boss is the best mentor an upcoming writer can ever aspire to have? Well, today it was proven to me that indeed, I am employed by someone who is genuine about building me. I am writing my first-ever news story! I have been a columnist for 3 years now, from Mail&Guardians THOUGHT LEADER, where I wrote for a year, to Ndalo Medias DESTINY magazine, and now to the SUNDAY INDEPENDENT. But for the first time ever, Im actually going to write a news story - like a real journalist, which Im not. I initially refused to do this, telling him that Im not ready to write news stories. I mean, thats the work done by proper journalists. Ive never studied Journalism, not even one module. I dont know how to write news stories. But my boss believes I am capable. His confidence in me is enough to make me feel that I can do this. Were starting small, 600 words. But it already feels like something big. Ive only been with the SUNDAY INDEPENDENT for 5 months but I have grown more than I ever did in 3 years. This is why Im not leaving SUNDAY INDEPENDENT anytime soon. All these offers can wait. Im not for sale to the highest bidder, because Im in the best hands!
