Remember months back I was invited to give a talk for a supposedly volunteer work? I was complaining about the correspondence deemed unfriendly? I finally gave the talk today and I just cant help feeling sad over the entire 3 hours. Students paying money basically to understand what filmmaking is all about. What really upset me was that when I went in there all students should be in. But apparently, it CLASHES with their timetable where they are involved in a shooting with the director on the practical part of the course. So what happened? In that 3 hours session, students come in and go and listened just a portion of it. Thank goodness some students stayed throughout the entire session. Perhaps they were not involved in the practical course? The most important message I was trying to convey to them, as a filmmaker, is never to neglect sound. And well, isnt that ironic (again)? The organiser themselves neglects the very reason why I was brought in to talk about. I mean, cant they wait? As a director you should know better sound is fundamentally the most important thing of all. Without sound, there is no life in your visuals. The attitude you have by dissing out sound as part of the filmmaking syllabus, rendering the students learning only perhaps 30-50% of what I was trying to teach them, is totally unfair to them. I mean fine, if you want to stay ignorant, please do. But dont do that to the extent of the students! It was a really, really bad programme. I really felt sorry for the students. I gave them my email and I hope they would contact me so that I can pass more knowledge to them. I really hope so. And yes, I will email them this same message to the organiser tomorrow morning and tell them please, be professional! Students are paying you to run this course, and you just probably ruined the true meaning of making a film. And oh, did I mentioned that I earlier smsed them to MAKE SURE prepare a good set of speakers AND projector? Guess what? I got none of that. Luckily I insisted bringing my own speakers (but they arent really that good)... but at least they can hear the samples Im showing them. Otherwise, the entire 3 hours is nothing but a lesson through laptop speakers. Lol... Im teaching SOUND using laptop speakers. Sigh...
