Remember the railroad tracks that ran up First Avenue toward the square? They were along the back side of the warehouses that fronted Second Avenue. I can remember seeing boxcars anchored on the slope. There were large metal rings in the street that were used to secure the boxcars so that they could be loaded and unloaded. The tracks did not reach the square. Jere Baxter wanted to build tracks across the square, but the city fathers did not agree. He got out one night with his own crew and started laying track. The tracks on First stopped at the point he got caught in the act!
