Remembering Day Two of the very first Atlanta Lindy Exchange - TopicsExpress

Remembering Day Two of the very first Atlanta Lindy Exchange (ATLX1), which happened 10 years ago today (March 27, 2004). The schedule for that day was a DJed outdoor dance from 1-5 p.m. at the lower pavilion of Centennial Olympic Park in downtown. Perfect weather, mellow vibe, pizza -- the only problem was the explosion of pollen in the air. And we got a lucky break: wed scheduled the pavilion dance before realizing that the Georgia Dome next door was a host venue for the second round of the NCAA basketball tournament! What a scare, until we found out that the games in the Dome were scheduled for Friday-Sunday, instead of Thursday-Saturday. A big relief, and a wonderful afternoon. The big Saturday Night dance was held at the Dorothy Benson Center in Sandy Springs. Beautiful spring evening. The band was the Big Peach Orchestra, who played a really swinging version of Basies In a Mellow Tone, among other classics. Hundreds on the floor. Success! The only problem was the heat -- we couldnt control the AC from the county-managed venue. It had to be adjusted by a technician employed with the county, who would handle it downtown. Only, that never happened, despite our called-in request. Bureaucracy and climate control -- another lesson learned. Late night (12:30 - 5 am) took place at the Atlanta Dance studio just down the road, conveniently located across from the IHOP, which was swamped with our people all night. The venue featured a second dance room, one of ATLs first-ever blues rooms, a harbinger of things to come. The late night main room was the only full hour I DJed that weekend. I and my house guests made it home and to bed in time for sunrise. I dont do that sort of exhausting schedule anymore, but at that time it was more common, especially on that unforgettable weekend. Ill post some artifact photos shortly.
