“Remembering Elodie” In the category of Life imitates Art: While researching the French Resistance, I came across this moving little story. On June 29, 1944, near Lyon, 7 Jews who fought against the Nazis were executed. A tradition had grown up that men scheduled for execution would defiantly sing the night before, usually the “Marseillaise” or the “Song of the Partisans,” and the guards would try to silence them. But on that night of the 28th one of the men, who had a trained voice, instead sang an aria from Puccini’s “Tosca” in which the painter, Cavaradossi, scheduled to be executed the next day, sings about how he never loved life more than at that moment. It’s said that even the guards in that Nazi prison near Lyons were moved to silence.https://youtube/watch?v=uu9xX-c5WnU
