Remembering Oak Creek Gurudwara Shooting On August 5th, 2012 a gunman walked into the temple killing six people and wounded four others. Sikhism is the worlds fifth largest independent religion. It originated in northwest India, and its central tenets are belief in a single God, equality for all people and a commitment to community service. Sikh men wear a turban and keep an uncut beard, among other articles, as a sign of devotion to God and to keep a strong identity. This uniform identity ensures equality and discipline. Unfortunately, this appearance is often incorrectly confused with Al-Qaeda, Taliban, etc. The Gurdwara is the proper name for a Sikh Temple, a place of peace. Members of all faiths are welcome. Sikhs sit together humbly on the floor while praying. After services, Sikhs and non-Sikhs sit as equals on the floor while eating a meal donated and prepared by members of the congregation. Sikhs believe in the validity of all faiths. To that end, they have fought to ensure religious freedom, not only for themselves but for members of all communities. Sikh beliefs Simran and Sewa. These are the Foundation of Sikhism. It is the duty of every Sikh to practice Naam Simran daily and engage in Seva (selfless service) whenever there is a possibility- in Gurdwara; in community centre; old peoples homes; care centres; major world disasters, etc. Guru Nanak formalised these three aspects of Sikhism: Naam Japna. A Sikh is to engage in a daily practice of meditation and Nitnem by reciting and chanting of God’s Name Kirat Karni. To live honestly and earn by ones physical and mental effort while accepting Gods gifts and blessings. A Sikh has to live as householder carrying out his or her duties and responsibilities to the full Vand Chakna. Sikhs are asked to share their wealth within the community and outside by giving Dasvand and practising charity (Daan). To “Share and consume together”. OakCreek2012#Sikh#Warriors#CHARDIKALA
