Remembering a teacher who taught me to confidently confront challenges in life using my most priced asset - my knowledge. Mr. Matthis taught me Industrial Arts in McTigue Jr High, Ohio (awesome class as we learned how to make house and rocket models). One day, he said to me, Shahrima, you have done a great job with your work. I need your help. You see those boys at the back? I want you to help them out with their project. I looked back and saw that the boys he meant were those whod been bullying me in school (remember, I was a 13 yr old scrawny, colored, Asian Muslim girl in a US jr high school). I was of course, shocked and scared. But Mr. Matthis reassured me,wl with a twinkle in his eyes dont worry Shahrima, I will watch over you. I know you can help those boys with their project. You are my smartest student And I did. That experience will forever be etched in my mind. How a teacher had helped shaped and build the resilience of a 13 yr old girl through his mindful and sensitive ways. For that, I will always be grateful and inspired. To all the teachers out there, you will never know how far your actions can impact the lives of others. May Allah grant you the best of both worlds. Happy Teachers Day!
