Remembering the Great Reformation Each year, in spite of popular focus on Halloween, Lutherans love to remember, with joy and thanksgiving, the actions young Martin Luther took on October 31, 1517. Since we’ll celebrate the first 500 years of our Lutheran faith just two years from now, we wondered: How was the 400th anniversary celebrated? In Arcadia, Michigan, almost 15,000 Lutherans gathered for special German and English language worship services held at three parishes. One service included a 200-voice choir. In October 1917, synod’s The Lutheran Witness published an unusually lengthy article briefly describing the occasion’s history. With elaborate graphics (seen here) three pages from the October issue give us an idea of the excitement the occasion inspired.
