Remembering the catastrophe caused by Alaknanda and Mandakini river in 2013. A similar but more vicious catastrophe was caused in 1894 when Gohna Tal ,on Birahi Ganga,a tributary of Alaknanda , burst. The Gohna Dam was caused by the land slide across Birahi Ganga. This dam was 11000ft wide at the base and 2000 ft wide at summit. Its height was 9000 ft. When it burst in August 1894, ( It was a man made effort) 10 billion Cubic ft of water was released on the down stream in a span of six hours. Although the flood devastated the valley of Ganga right up to Hardwar and swept away every bridge in the entire Ganga Valley. But such was the management of Britishers that only one family was lost to the floods and that too, as they returned to the danger zone after being forcibly removed from it.
