Remembrance Five years ago My mother slipped passed us To celebrate her anniversary With my father. It was only fair, He’d missed a couple In recent years. And so she set the celebration up herself. It left us bereft, But in our hearts we understood. And it was good that they could be together After so, so long apart. Their story. Neither family was best pleased. No woman good enough for My father’s mother. He no Catholic so Prejudiced my mother’s mother. So they eloped. No family, no pictures. My mother in an ivory colored linen tea dress. My father’s design for wedding rings. And they set off to make their marriage. Forty-seven years. More poorer than richer, If you measure by wealth. Don’t. The table was full. The children clothed. There was enough. Lessons that came from sickness. Near fatal more than once, But with that perspective Survival brings. And appreciation of health. Sorrow, loss, death. Burying two grandchildren and a man once child. Things that shouldn’t have to be. And his father, her parents. Finding joy in spite of sorrow. Choosing joy and choosing love. It wasn’t always easy, Or pleasant. But love prevailed. Always, always more better than worse. Laura Gerling
