Renowned economist Morris Kleiner estimates occupational licensing “redistributes between $116 and $139 billion (in 2000 dollars) from consumers (to licensed professionals) and reduces (national) economic output by $35 to $42 billion per year” by limiting consumer choice and artificially increasing costs of services with little, if any, measurable increase in quality. Some states are now taking a critical look at their occupational licensing laws. Utah, with its lauded business friendly reputation and proud right to work status should be doing much more on this front.
