Rep. Schakowsky Strongly Supports Illinois General Assembly’s Passage of Marriage Equality Chicago, IL. (November 5, 2013) – Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) released the following statement after the Illinois General Assembly passed SB 10, the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act, which legalizes marriage equality: “I am ecstatic that the Illinois General Assembly has followed the Illinois State Senate and passed SB 10, the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act this afternoon. Every citizen of our state and our nation deserves equal treatment under the law, and SB 10 will assure that every committed couple in Illinois enjoys the same protections and benefits. This is an enormous victory, and I congratulate my good friend, Greg Harris, who sponsored this bill in the General Assembly, and everyone who worked so hard to achieve marriage equality in Illinois. We must continue to move these initiatives forward in states across the nation, and on the federal level, through bills such as the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) and the Respect for Marriage Act. I will work closely with my colleagues on the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus to guarantee LGBT equality at the federal level.” ###
