Report Back - on site meeting between TfL and Stop Killing - TopicsExpress

Report Back - on site meeting between TfL and Stop Killing Cyclists at the southern Elephant & Castle Junction yesterday. The Road Management Team from TfL (a manager and two engineers) met with Fred Smith, Icame Isawi Steve and myself at 5pm yesterday and spent an hour walking about the three sides of the junction. The three of us felt it was a constructive meeeting and they generally agreed with the points we raised. There was surprisingly little disagreement. They have agreed to draw up plans along the lines of what James Gower drew for us with indicative cycle lanes on the Strata and Shopping Centre Left Hand Turns - thus creating protected left-hand turns at these two sites. If we get these, all three of us felt that it would be a major win for our campaign. They are proposing to have fully painted in entrances and exits and broken white lines along the cycle-routes with painted cycles also. The Strata route would be almost exactly along the path created at the Stop Killing Cyclists Die-In at the junction. They also agreed to paint in feeder routes to the Toucan Crossings, so that people can see how to do the right-hand turns in a safer manner, if they do not want to do so on the main carriageway. They have also agreed to see if they can install better signage to enable cyclists to know the protected by-passes are there and to ensure pedestrians also know. They agreed the costs for such a project would be minimal, as nearly all the infrastructure required was already in place - dropped kerbs, toucan traffic lights with dual pedestrian/cyclist lights and relevant surface indicators. The main problem is that the infrastructure that they put in 3 years ago, is invisible to almost all pedestrians and cyclists. The third side near the new residential skyscraper being built, is due to be included in the new Northen Elephant Roundabout Proposals - which are supposed to be announced today. We had called for a segregated route along here and on the other side of the road in front of the Northern Line Underground entrance. So we shall see today if those requests have been listened to.They promised to get back to us with drawings asap. So another step forward to a safer Elephant - thanks again to everybody who turned up at the Die-In - without you these meetings would not be happening. Yes We Can! Donnachadh
