Report: On Saturday, November 22nd, from 3:00 P.M. through 8:30 P.M, some theater lovers were enthusiastically engaged in yet another workshop arranged by the “Love for Theater” group. The event was held at Dr. Nupur Lahiris residence in Princeton, NJ. The five-hour long session was attended by Nupur Lahiri, Indranil Mukherjee, Rama Das, Abhijit Ganguly, Piu Mazumdar, Sharmila Chatterjee, Subhasish Das, Subhodev Das and Sushmita Dutta. The session was divided into two distinctly different event formats. In the first half, participants were asked to read creative works – story, fact, fiction, play, narrative etc. Rama Das began with her published story emphasizing human relations. Subhodev Das read a marvelous piece written by him on events borrowed from the Telangana struggle movement. Sushmita Dutta read a skit written by her emphasizing some socio-economic facts in India. Abhijit Ganguly read a satire written by him on Ebola. Indranil Mukherjee read an abstract piece on co-relation between ones halo and shadow. Nupur Lahiri read one of her published articles on compulsive obsession and depression. The second half was totally dedicated to a typical theatrical workshop where participants were asked to conceptualize and present given issues in specified theatrical formats. Over a break of 45 minutes, participants worked on three different issues like, “Local Bengali Programs” / Format: Drama, “Helplessness of Women” / Format: Comedy, and, “Human Traffic” / Format Drama. Three teams brain-stormmed over given issues and prepared presentation within the given time. On the issue “Local Bengali Programs” / Format: Drama an extemporaneous short play was presented by Sushmita Dutta, Subhodev Das and Abhijit Ganguly on challenges and difficulties that local Bengali program organizers face in sponsoring star celebrities from India. The format was drama with some touch of comedy. The team excelled in enacting a fact-based event with off-the-cuff dialogues. On the issue “Helplessness of Women” / Format: Comedy was presented by Indranil Mukherjee, Rama Das and Piu Mazumdar. Again, the plot was based on the given issue presented in comedy format having extemporary dialogues like – husband asks wife “Have you ever spoken in English?” Wife replies, “Yes, of-course”. Husband says “Prove it to me, say, I love you...” On the issue “Human Traffic” / Format Drama was presented by Nupur Lahiri, Subhasish Das and Sharmila Chatterjee. It was probably the toughest theme to conctualize and enact. But, each of the three members presented the issue very well through disjoined characters having some commonalities in terms of human traffic. Well enacted choreography was the key element of this presentation. All the three groups excelled in presenting the issues. Discussions were held after each presentation to gather participants views and opinion. Participants thoroughly enjoyed the 5-hour long session. The event concluded on commitment to the next session and its possible thematic content At Love for Theater, this is a monthly event. Those who have missed this one, stay tuned for the next session in December. Its a fun place to be, and, its free for all, especially those who have that heart-felt passion and love of theater.
