Report Says Israel Forcibly Injected African Immigrants with Birth Control A new report just revealed that African women immigrating to Israel have been subjected to mandatory contraceptive injections. This program, the new report indicates, effectively amounted to forced, temporary sterilization. In all, more than 130,000 Ethiopians, most of them Jewish, reside in Israel. But this African Jewish community experiences significantly higher poverty and unemployment rates than the rest of the country’s, lighter-skinned Jewish population The birth rate of Ethiopian-Israelis has been steadily declining over the past decade by at least 20 percent. This decline is the result of a birth control regimen that has been forced upon Ethiopian immigrant women. The Israeli news sources Haaretz explains that one Ethiopian immigrant explained that the doctors who injected her said that that “people who frequently give birth suffer.” The government of the State of Israel has acknowledged the issue and yet will not admit any wrongdoing. The government has vowed to institute changes in healthcare for immigrants. Israel’s health minister has decreed that gynecologists have been ordered “not to renew prescriptions for Depo-Provera for women of Ethiopian origin if for any reason there is concern that they might not understand the ramifications of the treatment.” Ministry Director-General Roni Gamzu said that “the sweeping use of Depo-Provera among Ethiopian women raises heavy suspicions that we are talking about a deliberate policy to control and monitor fertility among this community. “The data… point to a paternalistic, haughty and racist attitude that limits considerably the freedom of Ethiopian immigrants to choose the birth control that is medically suitable for them.” ACRI said statistics from a major Israeli health provider showed that it had administered Depo-Provera injections to 5,000 women in 2008, 57 percent of whom were Ethiopian. Israel’s intent to limit the “burdensome” African Jewish population has made many recall the eugenics experiments of the Nazi Holocaust.
