Report on Saturdays training @Students, I only saw your basics - TopicsExpress

Report on Saturdays training @Students, I only saw your basics and one drill. If everything else required for your next rank that I didnt see (kata, all other drills, self-defense, sparring, and instruction) would score a B, of the 8 students I would pass 3, fail 3 but could be talked into passing them if another black belt vouched for them, and fail the remaining 2. Failing should not be looked at as a bad thing but as a way to learn to improve yourself. If you were not ready yesterday then now you know you need to continue to improve so you can pass when the real test occurs. Here are my expectations for rank. Obviously higher ranks require everything below them. The other Black belts may have higher expectations. Brown - You should know all requirements, be able to perform them at high levels, and instruct other students to their next rank. The brown belt is basically a 2-5 year test for black. You know and have the skills for black belt, you just need to improve them. There is no excuse for not knowing curriculum. You are an unsharpened sword. 1000s of hours have gone into making you where you are now but you still need 100s of hours to sharpen and polish yourself into a fine instrument. Purple - All kihon, kata, and drills should demonstrate unquestionable effectiveness. This level of performance should occur 100% of the time. You should be able to instruct and run effectively any drill at the students current rank. Green - Proper and quality kihon is demonstrated in all your actions (kata, drills, sparring). You can help others run through their kata and other basic drills. There is no question that you know what is needed to do brown or purple belt level techniques you just need practice to perform at the next level. Blue - You are starting to move past the new student level and are starting to develop an acumen for learning karate. When new techniques and drills are introduced you dont have to do them perfect or correct the first time but know what to ask to help better learn the art. You are the student that the new students most look to because your rank is one their most immediate understandable goals. Yellow - Congratulations on your first color belt! Things will still feel awkward, at some point you may find yourself facing the complete opposite direction from everyone else in a drill but that is fine. You now have a basic understanding of how to move, stand, and perform the foundations for karate. You have a long, exciting, and great path still before you in karate, but now you have the foundation to become a black belt.
