Rescued from Pakistan when the Russians were trying to take Afghanistan in 1981, this very unusual golden camel-color single-knot hand tied wool carpet was once in the Royal Family of Bhopal of India, before Britain divided India and Pakistan. The rug was made in Sheikhupura, outside of Lahore, the 5000 year old city where Shalimar Gardens still enchant; and was made expressly for the Princess of Bhopal. After partition, it graced the old High Court drawing room at 13 Fane Road in Lahore, before it made its way to America, as a wedding present for the American bride of a cousin of General Zia. This very unusual Bokhara design has open starburst patterns, rather than closed medallions, which is very rare. The wools are all vegetable dyed, and soft to the touch. Elegant understated golden color, with navy blue and burgundy in the starbursts, along with other secondary colors. The rug has a wonderful sheen, different effect viewed from each opposite direction. Please note: the wide photo of the carpet appears to show a flaw at the top of the photo ~ there is no such flaw ~ it must have been a smudge on the lens of my iphone. Sorry. Dimensions are about 62 x 87. Make me an offer!
