Research Methods Academy Presents Workshop on Research Methodology Have you heard the term research methodology but been unsure what it comprises? Do you have a dissertation or thesis coming up that will require a research proposal? Many students find the term used in their classes but the process never explained. This workshop will discuss the concept, and help students get started planning for the process and writing a comprehensive research proposal. It would open up new venues, methods and approaches to answer different research questions. Day1: (Saturday: 9/11/2013) 10:00 am – 3:00 pm Session 1: Developing the problem statement (2 hours) Instructors: Dr. Heba Salah, PhD - Lancaster University, UK - The Choice of a research topic - Search engines and search strategies - When to stop? - The Structure of a research proposal - Deductive versus inductive approach to a research - Importance of problem statement - Types of problem statements Session 2: Reviewing the literature (3 hours) Instructors: Dr. Heba Salah, PhD - Lancaster University, UK - The purpose of the literature review and the importance of structure - What is a research gap? - Sources of prior literature for your research project - How to analyze prior literature? - How to organize arguments of prior literature and your own? - Integrating prior literature Day 2: (Saturday: 16/11/2013) 10:00 am – 3:00 pm Session 1: Researching the topic and referencing (2 hours) Instructors: Dr. Heba Salah, PhD - Lancaster University, UK - Key steps in researching your topic - Linking literature review to other sections of the proposal - Theoretical versus professional contribution - Harvard referencing system explained and applied - Writing in-text citations - Writing a bibliography Session 2: Qualitative Research (3 hours) Instructors: Dr. Eman Arafa, PhD – Aston University - A typology of Research Designs (Exploratory, Descriptive, Casual) - Qualitative Vs Quantitative - When do you need to conduct a qualitative research? - Qualitative research methods (e.g. Focus groups, content analysis, interviews) - Writing interview guides - Characteristic of a successful qualitative research - Data analysis and interpretation in qualitative studies.
