Resonator World: The ukulele originated in the 19th century in Hawaii, after being developed in the 1880’s in Maderia. This instrument belongs to the Lute family of instruments and it is often associated with the music of Hawaii. The Ukulele usually has four gut strings or nylon. The tone and volume of the ukulele varies with the size and construction of the instrument, there are four sizes, baritone, concert, tenor and soprano. In the 1920’s the ukulele became important in the Jazz age and would continue to do so throughout the 1950’s - 1970’s. The ukulele would be made from plastic by Mario MacCaferri, in the 1940’s to the late 1960’s. Unfortunately after the 1960’s the ukulele lost popularity which would continue until the late 1990’s, when an interest in the instrument evolved. Dopyera and Beauchamp formed the National Stringed Instrument Company in 1927 to manufacture ‘National’ resonator guitars later adding ukuleles and mandolins to their product line. In 1929 the Dobro Manufacturing Company manufactured not only resophonic guitars but ukuleles and mandolins made with a cone and spider. Entering into the Second World War in 1941 saw the end of manufacture for all metal bodied resonator instruments as the metal was required. Most ukuleles where made of wood, though different compounds have been used including plastic, fibreglass or wood. The most expensive Ukuleles are made from Koa which is an Hawaiian wood. Resonator metal bodies may be brass, aluminum or steel. Both metal and wooden bodies are often painted, wooden bodies may be stained or lacquered. Metal bodies may be plated or plain, and are sometimes engraved. Resonator instruments may have round sound holes with screens or cut f-holes at the top of the face, or a hole cut into the side of the body angling up towards the players face, through which the sound of the instrument issues.
