Response to BDHydros latest round of letters What we are suggesting is that no one sign the form that Hydro is sending out – it forms a contract and legitimatizes this extortion fee. Rather what I did is to check the option that I will keep my old meter, crossing out the wording that follows re fees, and mark “VOID” across the rest of the form. I sent both in the envelope provided by Hydro. Hydro is clearly trying to kill the class action and we believe this to be at the minimum unethical. Many of us are refusing to pay the extortion fee. If we pay for our usage how can they legitimately cut off our service? I don’t think they can – and if they did the PR would kill them. The “response” letter advises Hydro that we do not agree that they have the right to charge extortion fees, but if, out of fear of punitive action by Hydro, we decide to pay them, it will be under duress. Everyone has to make a decision about whether to pay or not, but many are refusing. One told me he would send the fee via a separate cheque made payable to “The extortion dept. of BC Hydro.” Many people can’t afford to pay, which is what Hydro is hoping and this is, by definition, extortion. I am encouraging everyone to write to the BCUC about the fees – the hardship that people who are most vulnerable, the sick, the elderly, young families, will suffer. We need to inundate them with letters so that they cannot be told by Hydro that no one is concerned.
