Restaurant Review: Gidleigh Park Inn. gidleigh/restaurant I went to this restaurant because the chef was supposed to be Michael Caine. Well it was Micheal Caine but not the real one. I guess I also went because it is in my hotel. it was pretty expensive. You know what I mean: the sort of place where people look like they are performing surgery when they cut up their food and then chew really really slowly while gazing at a wall or window. Clearly all of the diners were short on the smile gene. I opened with a lobster salad and then had the veal and several desserts. I had a few complaints. My veal came with sweetbread ravioli and the sweetbread was not sweet at all. WTF! I almost asked the waiter to take it back. One of my desserts was white chocolate ice cream, chocolate ice cream wrapped in chocolate and then bittersweet chocolate mousse. The waiter gave me no instructions or history about the item at all but every time he served someone wine he want on an on about the vintage, the grapes, the soil, and blackberries, strawberries, blah blah. But for me and chocolate -- not a word. A good waiter would have told me where the chocolate came from, when it was harvested and what the workers were wearing or thinking about when they harvesting it. More importantly he would have to start with the mousse and work toward the white chocolate ice cream. It was so disappointing to have a bittersweeting ending. Never do that. But at least there were petitfours but, and I am not kidding, there were only three. What can I say over on Tripadvisor. Almost everyone there gave it 5 stars. Even a tire company gave it 2 stars. I want to give it 3 stars because the 20 people waiting on the 20 of us eating were nice all except the sommolier who whined constantly about the wine and where it came from. And, he made everyone smell the cork when it yanked it out of the bottle. Maybe he was just mad about being from Somalia. Just like my favorite literary character, "Little Critter," I was so mad.
