Resting and recovering from an awesome ConCarolinas. There were some fleeting moments of disorganization, but considering the raw numbers of people involved that has to be forgiven. Carol J. Cowles and Jada Hope poured so much blood, sweat, and tears into pulling things together, accommodating George R.R. Martins ever-changing needs/schedule, and the hordes of diverse fans (I talked to one couple who drove all the way from Pittsburgh), that the con has to be considered a huge success. As usual the highlight was the people: I saw but didnt get to spend nearly enough time with David B. Coe, A.J. Hartley, Faith Hunter, Misty Massey, Stuart Jaffe, Gail Martin, James Maxey, John Hartness, Jonah Knight, Janine Spendlove, James Ray Tuck Jr, Gray Rinehart (who I only ever really saw in the cons last hour), Emily Leverett, Carrie Ryan, and somebody else (Im sure Im forgetting someone)(like Davey Beauchamp and Jeremy F. Lewis)(see, I told you Id forget someone) (like Tom Berrisford and Samuel Montgomery-Blinn and Tera Fulbright)... ;-) Also took my three teenage girls to the con. It was the first con for two of them and what an intro to the convention world it was. I definitely scored a few cool points with two of them when I was able to get them into the panel I moderated with/for George R.R. Martin without them having to wait in line. Sounds like a small thing, but if you have teenagers you know how very hard they are to impress. And one last bit of cool personal news: Got word that my short story in the anthology Big Bad 2 (due out around Labor Day weekend) has been scheduled as the lead story. Given that Im trying to spend more time wearing my writer hat, Im really pleased the books two editors liked it so much. Thank you x 1,000 to John and Emily for that honor. Next up: ConGregate in Winston-Salem, mid-July.
