Results from the first five days of Operation Distraction, - TopicsExpress

Results from the first five days of Operation Distraction, launched last week to crack down on inattentive drivers, show 50 drivers a day have already been stopped by police for mobile phone offences; nearly double the number normally detected for the offence each day. With distraction a contributing factor in up to two thirds of fatal crashes and approximately 15 per cent of serious injury crashes, drivers need to swtich off their phones when driving. Drivers know the risks involved in taking their eyes and focus off the road; using a mobile phone, particularly texting or dialling phone numbers when driving, is one of the more dangerous activities taking place on our roads today. Operation Distraction runs for three more weeks, with Motor Accident Commission and the Department for Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI).
