Retail Crime:- attacks against employees The physical and verbal abuse of staff, where it may not involve the taking of goods or money, also has a huge negative impact on retailing. Recent studies in the UK have shown clearly that there is an increase in instances of abuse towards retail staff, and perhaps the worst aspect of it is that many of the aggressors do not even feel that they are in the wrong by doing it! A leading security firm discovered that a staggering one in twenty UK shoppers felt that they were vindicated in directing abuse towards a member of shop staff if they were in any way dissatisfied with the service they received. For the employees and businesses concerned the effects can be debilitating, with the wide ranging consequences including: Decreased employee morale and motivation Poor staff performance Increased absenteeism Increased staff turnover Poor company image All of the above are quite able of resulting in a business closing down and therefore the seriousness of the situation should not be overlooked. Steps that a retailer can take to deal with this problem include: Encouraging the reporting of any incidences, it is vitally important that employees themselves do not regard it as an “occupational hazard.” Support for victims provided by the employer. Employee training to ensure staff are aware of how to prevent and hopefully reduce the threat of abuse at work by knowing the best way to deal with aggressive customers.
