Review of a John Deere lawnmower. Love the part about the wife!!! Purchased our John Deere back in August, 2003 after much research and need of a self propelled mower due to broken collarbone and ribs. Really like the caster wheels and the idea that I had bought my last lawn mower for many years due to brands reputation for durability. Thought I had bought the best...2nd time trying to start it, the drive to the rear wheels failed. A year later, wife hit small stump and bent the crankshaft ($250 to fix at the dealer), two weeks later (wifes last time mowing the lawn)hit a small rock resulting in another bent crank shaft...last year, noticed some smoking from engine. Checked oil and it was fine. Dealer (who serviced mower) claims that someone ran it without adding oil to engine (please note that oil has always been at the proper level)...now my neighbors consider me to be a toxic waste site due to smoke from engine...Total cost of mower over three and a half mowing seasons...$949: $500 to purchase, $449 for 1st and 2nd crank shafts and servicing), and loss of faith in wifes ability to help with the mowing when I am not able to do it. The lesson learned about durability in Deere walk behind mowers and the ability of the local dealer to service and stand behind their product...priceless.
